The rapid ascent of this new, small, family-run winery, consisting of Cascina Bompe vineyard in Alba and La Brunella in Barolo?s Castiglione Falletto, is in part due to their consultant, noted enologist Beppe Caviola, Gambero Rosso?s ?Winemaker of the Year? in 2002. Achille Boroli handles all of the winery?s daily operations. Cascina Bompe, 3 miles from Alba, at approximately 1,270 feet above sea level, is on top of a hill called Madonna di Como that has been historically documented as a centuries-old wine-growing site. La Brunella has a separate, newly completed winery beautifully designed by one of the Boroli sons, Guido. This estate includes two of Italy?s most prestigious Barolo vineyards: Villero and Cerequio Crus. A new cellar features an arresting design element: the external walls above ground are clad in oak staves from barriques previously used in Barolo production.
The 2012 Barolo Cerequio offers praiseworthy elegance that is made more evident thanks to the wine's solid structure. Polished aromas of wild berry, anise seed, dried ginger, tar and licorice combine to give the wine a lasting sense of aromatic lift and buoyancy. The mouthfeel follows with a tight and streamlined approach. Boroli has achieved beautiful results in the Cerequio cru, despite a vintage that saw sporadic hail storms and difficult summer heat spikes.
