Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard is one of the most respected producers in the world-renowned village of Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy's Cote d'Or, where the family's history can be traced back to the 15th century. In 1960, Jean-Noel expanded, through further vineyard acquisitions, the Domaine he had inherited and also began bottling wines at the estate. Under his management, the Domaine went on to achieve international acclaim. In 1989, Jean-Noel's daughter Caroline Lestime took over. She has poured great energy into viticulture that respects the Domaine's diverse terroirs and into winemaking practices that express them faithfully. Her bottlings include a stunning range of Bourgogne, Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations, which represent some of the world's greatest white wine vineyards. Caroline has also contributed to the advancement of the reputation of Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge with her excellent and affordable reds.
The 2015 Santenay 1er Cru Clos de Tavannes was more closed for business compared to the red Chassagnes, though it opens nicely with raspberry and crushed strawberry aromas, just a touch of iris and incense emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite firm in the mouth with a touch of iodine, plenty of grip on the marine-tinged finish. Pour with a hearty dish - it wears its heart on its sleeve.
