The Prieur? de Mont?zargues has a rich history dating back to ancient Roman times. Mont?zargues was originally known as the Grammont Abbey. Records show that in 1199, Guillaume ll and Rostang ll of Sabran added a mill, a supply of water and woodland . The monks who then settled at the priory gained the right to fish in Pujaut Pond. Pope Innocent lll wrote to the Abbot of Grandmont, urging him to host this new community with good grace; he consented. Yet in 1295, only three monks remained.... Today, Prieur? de Mont?zargues is owned by the renowned Richard family, involved in wine making and wine distribution since 1892. The Richard family is also the proud proprietors of the renowned Ch?teau La Nerthe, from Ch?teauneuf-du-Pape and Domaine de La Renjarde from C?tes du Rh?ne Villages.
Situated across the Rh?ne River from Ch?teauneuf-du-Pape, the vineyards of Tavel produce France?s finest ros? wine. The appellation status is only for low-yielding, ros? wines, and the wines have depth and structure. Tavel has several major soil types. The Guigal family works with growers who have vineyards on clay and pebbly soils similar to those of Ch?teauneuf-du-Pape. The grape varieties are a mix of the Southern Rh?ne red grapes, with 60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Clairette, 10% Syrah, and 5% others.
